The Socialization Game

We’ve told you how we do our job to socialize your Canaan Dog puppy before you get him, now it’s time to talk about how you can help him reach his full potential.

How to Play-The Socialization game starts on the first day your puppy arrives in his new home. There is no maximum number of players that can participate, however, 10 is the minimum number required. The goal is to see if your puppy can have 10 new experiences each week.  The 10 can be comprised of new people, places, or situations, but there must be a combination of both. The fun part is that there is no limit on what you can do, where you can go, or the number of different people you can meet!

The Goal-The general rule of thumb is that your puppy should experience 100 different people and situations during its first five months of life. However, that does not mean that the socialization process is done. Because the unique qualities of the Canaan Dog, continuing some form of the socialization game for the first 18-24 months of your dog’s life will reap great rewards.

Winning the Game-You know you will have won the game when you puppy grows into a well adjusted adult companion that feels comfortable in his own skin, no matter what the situation.

Here are a few tips to help you through the process:

Romp Around Town - While your puppy is still young, you’ll want to make sure he has positive experiences in all kinds of new and interesting situations. Get into the habit of taking your Canaan Dog where ever you go, whenever you go.  Try taking him to stores (our Mall in Colorado used to allow dogs), and to friends' homes (especially the ones with pets and children).   Hey, you could even try the Laundromat, drycleaners, and post office. Remember to bring lots of treats and encourage strangers to "meet and treat" your Canaan Dog.

Introducing Your Puppy  – Remember, the rule of thumb is to have your puppy meet at least 100 people by the time he/she is five months old.  Make a considerable effort to find a variety of people to introduce him to. Try meeting young people, old people, tall people, short, people.  Try going to a senior citizen center where they might encounter walkers and wheelchairs, or the beach where they can meet people wearing hats and sunglasses. Subtle differences count, so keep on meeting and greeting.

Children & Canaan Dogs - Make sure you establish clear rules for how children are allowed to handle your puppy, you want the experience to be enjoyable for everyone. Although Canaan Dogs are naturally responsive to children, you should never leave any child unattended with your Canaan Dog puppy.

Other Animals – Be sure to give your puppy plenty of opportunities to meet new dogs and other animals.  First introductions should be conducted in a controlled environment and on neutral ground (not on one or the other’s  “territory”).  Avoid disagreements by making it fair; if one dog is on a leash, then the other one should be as well.
